They're for storage, located right under the controls for the heat/air conditioner.
OMG...I have the same problem, only both are open - first one's hinge broke off...went to dealer - get this! $345 plus tax to replace interior compartments...cheap plastic no good stuff.......use electrician's tape for the time being and go to a junk yard to see if you can find one and then have a mechanic put it in for you.......
