hi..Did you figure out the problem. I seem to have the same issue. Sometimes the car starts right away and sometimes it takes several attempts and sometimes it won't start at all for few days but will start one fine day. I have 2000 Toyota Corolla and have the same issue. I got the battery tested at autozone 4 different times. Only one time, it showed bad and rest of the times, it passed the test. I still went ahead and replaced the battery for 110$ but I still have the same problem with the new battery :( Please let me know if you figured out your problem. Thanks in advance.
Older Toyotas had a cold start injector that enriched the fuel mixture from a cold start. Your engine relies on the coolant temperature switch input to richen the mixture on cold start. The quickest way to verify its operation is using the 16 pin diagnostic socket under the drivers side of the dash. A Scantool will directly read the temperature without intrusively having to test the sensor itself. The other likely cause is a fuel pressure regulator bleeding off fuel pressure causing a drop in fuel pressure or delivery at the fuel rail, to check this a fuel pressure gauge has to fitted in the fuel rail. Does the car attempt to start and stall or just not start? How does the car idle immediately after it starts? The reason I ask is perhaps there is a vacuum leak or idle air control valve can cause a weak mixture allowing too much air if it sticks open.
