Essentially in a matter of 5,000 highway miles, I have developed huge flat, worn spots on my tires and needed them replaced. I do not have any other symptoms of damaged struts [oil leaks, bumpy ride, bouncing, or knocking noises].

Sounds like shocks but are the tires a "good brand" or a low cost tire? Go in person to several tire and alignment shop get the service writer to walk out to your car and give their opinion and get a quote and idea of what they feel is wrong.
Thank you for your quick reply. I have already had the new tires installed [Michelins]. The old tires were some off brand, but 40,000 tires. I had a total of 27,560 miles on them in two years, mostly in town driving until this 5,000 mile trip. I never had a problem with the tires before, and car rides very smoothly until this past trip. Of course, the car rides smoothly again with my new tires. The place that put the new tires on the car suggested that the tire wear came from the age of the struts, not the total mileage on the car, which is 57,250. The original tires [Goodyear Infinitys] on the car when the car was new, only lasted 20,000 miles, but they were worn evenly, and they were 12 years old. I will take your advice and take the car to another service station to get another opinion.
