The information from the O2 sensor is used by the engine electronic control unit (ECU) to help determine how much fuel is needed to mix with the air coming into the engine so that the engine may run efficiently. Current model vehicles utilize O2 sensors before and after each catalytic converter. The purpose of the front O2 sensor (before the catalytic converter) is to measure the exhaust gases exiting the combustion chambers to determine how rich (low oxygen content) or lean (high oxygen content) they are. Depending upon whether the exhaust gas is lean or rich, the ECU adjusts the amount of fuel going into the engine to try to maintain an ideal mixture that produces the lowest emissions output. The purpose of the rear O2 sensor is to monitor the oxygen content of the exhaust gases leaving the catalytic converter. This provides the emissions system with a way to monitor the operation and efficiency of the catalytic converter. Notify me by email when my question has been answered Cancel close present)it had several problems before i could even get it off the dealership lot so i jump started it and drove it to a Sunoco repair shop and they looked through thethe entire car and gave me a laundry list of several repairs that were needed, overall cost was around $3500 or even a bit higher i believe. It being a 99 and bought for $2500 there was no way i was going to do all repairs nor could i afford to as i am a single dad with a3 yr old lil girl and live on an extremely low income do to only being able to work part time as i do not have anyone to watch my child when not in daycare. So because i did need transportation to and from work and daycare i repaired what needed to be done in order to pass inspection. Cuz of the yr it didnt need to pass emisions so it was just safety so i replaced all 4 tires, new altanater, new battery, new battery cables! Total price including inspection and sticker was $1120. I told the mechanic when i was able to get some money together id be back to have more work done cuz i realy needed a dependable vehicle and had now put $1120 into it plus all other cost for sales tax, register, insure and all that fun stuff so i wanted to get this car running as good as possible which brings me to now. I brought it back in and he looked through it again and told me there were no new issues. So i had him replace the front left caliper, both front rotors, and both front pads as well as the egr valve and lift sensor and also give it an oil change. Bill came to $855. There were still a few other issues with the car, but he said nothing that i wasgoing to break down from. He said it had a slight leak in valve cover gasket and the suspension had a problem with i believe the bushings, but that was not gonna effect the way the car runs so i could hold off until i had more money, and it also needed a power steering belt, but said same with that if i was tight with money it could wait. So i pick the car up and it was running beautiful, 15 miles later cel comes back on, but still was running smooth so i was going to stop in after work following day asthey ere now closed. Next morning i drive to work and notice cars not running like it was and when i parked isaw the cel began to flash and the idle was very rough. I brang it in he looked at it said it was cylinder misfire and i need to replace rear o2 sensor, but another problem was that the previous o2 sensor had been weilded into the manifold probably cuz the screw thread had been stripped. So he said he could replace it and rethread the manifold and would do it for only cost of parts, but said it was not his fault it was not misfiring when i picked it up. So he did o2 sensor and rethread the manifold and i paid $169 cost of part. He told me once he replaced o2 sensor power came back and idle was good and problem was fixed, but did sneak into our conversation i had a slight exhaust leak but no biggie, he had never mention this the first, or second time working on my car and this actualy came up just as we were shooting the shit. I thought no biggie. But as soon as i drove my car out of the parking lot inoticed a drastic change in the way my exhaust sounds and it is much louder, pick up seems to be there, but just not as smooth acceleration when giving it gas and it is much uch louder exhaust. Did he do something wrong? Is he not telling me something? How can mycars ound worse than ever when i just had $650 in repairs done on the engine plus the other 525 on brakes. So now im $2200 into this car and it seems to be in its worse shape. What could he have done??? Hope someone can give me something to go on when i go back on monday, thanks!
