will a bad coil or plugs wires make soun like their is a broken valve or rod?

Is the check engine light on? Any (pending) codes? Your noise can be coming from any one of the components that are driven by the engine (i.e. water pump), perhaps even the tensioner or idler bearing (driven by timing belt) - a closer inspection is needed! Any service history you can provide would be helpful.
