How do you know when it is time to replace the trasmission fluid and timing belt of a 1998 Toyota Camry XLE?

The transmission fluid and timing belt are both regular maintenance items. You can check the scheduled maintenance intervals in RepairPal's estimator: http://repairpal.com/estimator for some guidance. Many technicians recommend changing the transmission fluid at somewhat shorter intervals than is recommended in your owner's manual because most of put more wear and tear on the transmission than Toyota wants us to. The timing belt shoudl be replaced when it is recommended in your owner's manual. Normally, this is at either 60 or 90 thousand miles.
