Only you can answer this question. In my opinion, if you've kept up the the maintenance (not just the oil changes, but the more expensive spark plugs, timing belt, and fluids), and the car hasn't had accidents then yes, it is definitely worth it. Even if you haven't been perfect with the car, as long as you don't have a lot of expensive maintenance and repairs still pending, then yes it's worth it, because you can't replace this car for $2,000. BUT, if you've let it go and it needs a lot of other work as well, then maybe it's time to let it go and get a different car. Again, this is just my opinion, and only you can truly decide what's best for you.
first, let me say that i see/know it's been around 8 months since this was posted, although i was not on this site then. i bought a 1998 Toyota Camry LE 2.2L,Automatic several months ago with 200,000 miles on it. The first thing I asked the guy was,has the timing belt been changed recently, although it's NOT an interference engine,I just wanted to know, but he stated that he didn't know, because he bought it from his Professor at school. He gave me lots of service records, but the timing belt,I never saw where it had been replaced.i got a good deal on it,so here is what I've done to it>put new tires on it,$220.00,changed the oil & filter, the timing belt broke right after I purchased it,replaced the timing kit,(belt,WP,tensioners, springs, radiator, both hoses, coolant, fixed all the rear lights that were not working, stress on wire harness from factory breaks the wires(drivers side rear trunk at trunk hinge,I cut em,added bout 8 inches of wire, soldered them, heat shrunk them, made me a loop where they don't stress/break again),put wiring loom over them, all working fine and looks neat! i cleaned all the carpet, all the seats with a $1.00 bottle of LA'S TOTALLY AWESOME from the Dollar Tree,a scrub brush, and cotton towels to wipe up the crap it broke loose,was/waxed it! I bought all the parts from RockAuto for $131.99 plus $23.99 shipping=$155.98 verses Autozone for the same exact part numbers made by the same exact people, their price is $265.00,because they add tax, where RockAuto does not? My car is not perfect,BUT it rolls, has heat/air/radio,all the windows work well, gets me to and from where I need to go and back home with very little gas, that's all I need....
Oh,also put NGK Wires, and Denso plugs>PK20TR11 # 3253 ,OEM Toyota Thermostat....fixing to change all the instrument cluster bulbs out this week also....by the way, this car has Auto Headlights,so when you turn your car off, then when you open the drivers door the lights go off, then when you turn the key on next time, the lights come back on. Also none of the doors will lock when the key is in the key switch, car running or not, until you put it in gear(found out the last two listed by mistake)...
