The shaft of the axle has a wire Circlip that is on the shaft and retains the axle in the spider gear of the differential the shaft on being pulled out compresses the circlip and allows the axle to be pulled out. That side axle has the axle support bearing on the engine block that needs to be released to remove the axle.
