Transmission jumping-serviced found metal in pan

I just bought a used vehicle for my daughter. I bought the 1993 Toyota Camry 5 Door wagon. Worked fine for a few days-daughter says car jumps. Transmission place says there was metal in the pan and that it needs transmission re-built. Any ideas if this is correct or am I being told this because I am a female. Any other ideas for what it could be before I pay to have the whole transmission rebuilt? Thanks!!
