Hi, I'm one of the auto experts on RepairPal's Car Genius team! Thanks for sharing those details, they actually paint a pretty helpful picture! It sounds like you may have a couple of things going on that may or may not be related. Limp mode is the vehicle's way of protecting itself when it detects a significant fault, commonly related to the transmission or engine management system. The fact that it went into limp mode and then the battery completely drained shortly after could be coincidental, or could suggest an underlying electrical issue. A dead battery that won't hold a charge on a vehicle this age could point to a few things, the battery itself may simply be worn out, which is very common on older vehicles. However it could also indicate a parasitic drain, meaning something is drawing power from the battery even when the car is off. A failing alternator is another possibility, as it may not be properly recharging the battery while the car is running. Any of these issues combined with the limp mode fault could suggest an electrical or charging system problem that is affecting multiple systems on the vehicle. Given that there appear to be multiple things going on at once, and on a vehicle that's over 20 years old, we'd strongly recommend having a qualified shop do a thorough diagnosis rather than tackling things one at a time. Chasing electrical and limp mode issues separately can get costly quickly without the right approach.
