Check auto Transmission fluid level with engine running or not not running? Same question as being to adding new fluid? Thanks

Funny thing; owners manual seems to go out of it's way to keep the owner from knowing anything about the transmission except the type of fluid to use! I can appreciate that. Being that if you really Wanna know that, pay for mechanic college and learn to read drum charts while your at it, right? Toyota must really care that their customers cars maintain their "excellentness", and they are excellent! The fluid stick, running or not running, please. Thank you
