when do i need to worry about replacing my timing belt and water pump

I'm showing 90,000 miles as the mileage. I would not go beyond 7 years old, however, as age is an issue as well as mileage.
The typical answer is every 100K miles replace BOTH timing belt and water pump. However, I have a friend with a 97 Avalon with 275K miles on it, never changed either belt or pump, factory original. I don't feel that lucky so do mine around the 100 - 120K miles. If you engine leaks oil at the valve covers and most Avalons in the 96 - 99 models do around 175K, suggest doing belt and pump at no longer than 100K mileage mark. There is a belt, pump, idler pulley kit that saves you a little money than purchasing items individually. Compare the kit cost before taking on job. This is about a 6 hour job for a DIYer with tool experience.
