My grandmother's '98 Avalon has an annoying problem with its driver side brake lights. The light comes on when the brakes are not engaged. This only seems to happen when she leaves from work, and her car has been sitting out at night in the sub-zero cold.

Two things come to mind first, simple, check the bulbs make sure bulbs are fitted correctly and no one has fitted a single filament bulb in a double filament socket (or visa verse), second , look at the wiring harness that runs along the trunk lid hinge for broken wires in the harness.
I had a similar problem with my '99 Avalon. Try checking the brake fluid levels and that it's at least 1/2 way between the min/max levels.
