With a 96 toyota avalon , what reasona will it go into limp mode, could low oil be the case ? No lights on dash to indicate problem

No noises, just won't come out of second . have to keep foot pedal pressure consistent or loose torque completely

What makes this problem better or worse?

Turn off and can then go again if acceleration is taken off pedal
