What is your question?
Air blows fine out of both side vents (near windows) but center vents come and go. I can hear a "flap" change positions when it stops blowing. Was told it was a servo motor but when Toyota dealership had to replace the dash due to recall and I asked them to check and they stated they couldn't find anything. I can get the air to change from top to bottom to defrost but the center doesn't always blow when it should. I have already replaced the knob panel. Any help would be appreciated.
What makes this problem better or worse?
If the unit sits off for a while and then I start it on low it will blow out the center for awhile. Until I have to put blower on high or hit a bump and i hear the flap drop.
How long has your 2005 Toyota 4Runner had this problem?
Couple of years

Odd that this concern is happening, as I didn't foresee the center dash vents being independent of the side dash vents -- unless you are speaking only of the vents for the side windows, not the dash. There is a air vent mode control servo motor -- but it's a single unit that should affect all modes, not just the center vents independently. This makes me think there could be an issue back there that affects certain air distribution, but I cannot be sure. I would definitely recommend a second opinion other than the dealership's -- maybe consult some other folks near you to have a quick visual inspection to give you an opinion. https://repairpal.com/toyota-within-10-miles-of-prescott-arizona-86305
I am a bit perplexed as well. Like I said I can actually hear something "fall or drop" when it is working and then stops blowing out the center two vents. I have it visualized that some flap drops thus closing off the center vents. Just by what I hear. I can even hear somewhat of a musical tune if air trying to push something closed. Sort of like letting air out of a ballon of you are pulling the mouthpiece in different directions. Hope hat made sense but trying to explain. I did also mean the two outside front vents that can be moved by driver or passenger. Not defrost type vents.
My gut opinion is that something within the vents themselves, not the motor necessarily, but perhaps the link to the vent itself is disconnected or detached. There is no real way to know anything until you do some tear down to inspect, which could be very time-consuming and extensive.
