03 4Runner heater won't work and engine temp spikes hot

What is your question?

Heater quit working in sub zero weather one evening. The next morning it worked halfway through my 20 min in town commute before stopping. It coincided with a spike in the engine temp to HOT.

How long has your 2003 Toyota 4Runner had this problem?
