Why does my 4runner die when I push in the brakes?

Hello, this sounds like there is a problem related to engine vacuum. Your brakes are hard to operate because the power assist brake booster isn't working properly -- and the booster operates with engine supplies vacuum. If the engine has a vacuum leak, it can cause air / fuel mixture concerns and result in an engine stall. Have the air intake and vacuum system checked.
