What's the difference between a starter selonoid and a starter relay?

The Starter Solenoid is mounted on the Starter Motor, it closes two large electrical contact disks that provides direct power to the Starter Motor which cranks the engine. The Starter Relay energizes an electro-magnet which triggers the operations of the Starter Solenoid.
