I have a 1995 doing same thing. It has something to do with the cable or sensor that tells it you have your foot on the brake. Have not taken it apart yet to see how to adjust it (I hope)

There is a 1/2" access door on the driver's side of the shift console. Remove the screw to remove the panel and then you can insert a finger to pull back the lock lever so the shift lever isn't stuck in park. If you remove the console, you can wire the lock lever out of the way. The only think it does is prevent accidentally shifting into drive without pulling on the unlock grip on the shifter, and having your foot on the brake. If you have toddlers climbing in the car while it's running, don't override it! If you are an adult and know what you're doing, you probably don't need this feature-turned-failure.
