What is your question?
My son was driving our 2004 Outback tdoay ant the drivers door caught on fire. Apparently an electrical fire that spread to dash windshield area. Fire dept put out the fire. Why did it happen, what should we do, who should pay, who should repair? Car had been great until this odd inexplicable event.

This sounds like a electrical short some where in the system. I would be looking to make sure that all relays and ground wires are connected properly that are not burnt up. Also I would either have a mobile mechanic who knows electrical or a shop and have them replace the wiring and test the system.
Thanks. I have done a bit of research and it appears there is a fair number of similar incidents where Subaru drivers' doors catch fire. Apparently the heated mirrors on the winter edition overheat and burst into flames. We have some pictures that I would be happy to share. The inside of door and dash are pretty melted, windshield splintered, and fire department cut some additonal wires that were subsequently burning. The car was great until this.
