Can a power steering pump goes bad if there is air in the system?

My 2002 Subaru Outback just had a power steering pump replaced along with p/s fluid and hoses to and from the p/s pump about 6 weeks ago. The noise from the power steering system got worse instead of better. The car was subsequently taken to a Subaru dealer where I was advised the power steering pump must be replaced along with the idler pulley, bolt, washer and serpentine belt. When I mentioned the p/s pump was 6 week old, I was told air in p/s system can quickly damage the p/s pump. Is this correct?
