Just purchased a 2001 Subaru Legacy Wagon, motor runs strong, but kind of knocky

What is your question?

Prior to my purchase, the car has received: NEW water pump, hoses, head gaskets redone or replaced (sadly, I don't know which) Timing, alternator and belts. The engine has 101,689 original miles. I notice a burnt oil smell when I get out of the car after driving. Ideas? Oil pump? Seals? Thank You!

Oil odor probably coming from oil leaking on the exhaust manifold. Most likely from the valve cover gasket. Cylinder head problems are very common on this car. I would have the cylinder head checked to make sure repair was correctly completed.
