Why does my battery light remain on when the alternating is working fine?

I have just installed a subaru EJ20 phase II engine in my VW Vanagon. Everything works fine except for my battery warning light which remains on. It is on when I turn the key and remains on when the engine is running. It switches off when I disconnect the warning light cable from the alternator. The alternator workes fine and privides 15 volts to the battery when the engine is running. I have no clue what is going on here so any help would be appreciated!
