Hello, The brakes needing repair should not effect the gear selector at all. When you press the brakes, the brake light switch allows the transmission to move out of gear via the shift-interlock solenoid. If the brake lights are not working, or the brake light switch has a secondary circuit that has failed, you cannot move the shifter. There should be an over-ride, so check the owners manual for the location of the over-ride button as a temporary fix. Lastly, the if the ignition switch has been troublesome, it may be causing the issue as well.
