What makes this problem better or worse?

Hi, no doubt there are external oil leaks that are causing smoke under the hood as it burns off of hot engine components. This would be common for a 21 year old Subaru. White smoke out the exhaust - this could be from coolant ingestion indeed. It could also be "grey" smoke from oil burning, or "black" smoke from possibly running fuel rich. It's hard to know the color without seeing it in person. "No sign of head gasket leak" - per what testing or observation? Might be good to get a hands on assessment by a technician near you. https://repairpal.com/auto-repair-near-me Click the link or call us at 877-913-1554.
