Good Morning, We had a ticking sound in our engine and just heard back from the service area at our dealer. It seems to tick more when we are going at a low speed but maybe we just can't hear it at a high speed. No warning lights are visible on the dashboard. They said we have a substantial oil leak in the engine seal, similar to the ones that Subaru's had years ago with the head gasket. They said that oil is getting into places that it shouldn't. We have a 2012 Forester, which we love. They feel that we should either trade the car in or do an engine overhaul at the cost of $2,300. We sure would appreciate your opinion on this. We have received good service from this dealer but with the cost of this repair, we needed a second opinion. Our car is in very good shape and hasn't had any major problems. We get all of the routine maintenance that is recommended. It has around 84,000 miles on it. Thank you for your help with this.

Hello, As you stated that you are a client loyal to your local dealership, I would absolutely pursue goodwill assistance from Subaru. Ask your dealership (who should indeed consider you a loyal service client) to advocate to Subaru on your behalf to assist in the cost of this repair. Additionally, if that isn't helpful, contact Subaru customer service directly. That is honestly the answer. Neither dealership suggestion -- trade in or engine repair -- seems very customer focused. It seems advantageous. Take it from me. I run parts and service at a dealership (not currently Subaru, but another brand). I would jump through all kinds of hoops to take care of a client like you, and so would my particular manufacturer. Loyalty to my dealership service department is all the difference on how much help I can get my clients. You have leverage. You are loyal. You spend your hard earned money. Your vehicle does not appear to be that old nor have a tremendous amount of miles. The least Subaru could do is assist in the repairs. And the least your dealership can do is be willing to advocate for you. Good luck!
