Highway speed RPM fluctuations

What is your question?

I am wondering if anyone has any experience or answers as to what could be causing my automatic 4 cylinder Forester to randomly rev the tachometer and engine from 1500 RPM to 3500 RPM at highway speed. It only happens randomly when trying to accelerate at highway speed. The throttle becomes uncontrollable during this time. Could it be a speed sensor? Anything is possible with an automatic transmission, but if it were a true transmission problem wouldn't it be more regular?
