Noisey piston sound reduces as engine reaches temperature. I researched this, and it seems to be fairly common on late 90's early 00's Subaru Foresters. No loss if power, otherwise it runs fine. I use synthetic blend oil and Lucas at every oil change.

Sounds like piston slap all right. Often it's caused by overheating the engine but if you've found that Subarus tend to this I believe you, although my opinion of Subies in general is very high. Generally, piston slap doesn't really cause problems, just annoyance. One thing, be sure the oil viscosity is what's recommended in the owner's manual.
