car shuts off when putting car in gear

If the idle is too low, it can cause this. However, this can also be caused by a multitude of other things including a torque converter lock up clutch stuck on, wiring, misfire etc. I would bring it in to see exactly what is going on to be sure especially if the check engine light is on as well.
