What is your question?
My 12-yr old Forester has 216,500 mi. I maintained it and replaced parts as needed. Since about May 2010, the airbag warning light comes on shortly after startup and stays on. A local mechanic looked for but could not find the airbag plug connection under the dashboard to check with computer diagnostics. Do you know what could be causing the airbag light staying on and how to fix it? The car is due for re-registration and inspection at end of August and I may not do it if fixing light is expensive.

Hi, I know it's been over a month since you asked this question, but I'll give it a go. I live in Westford too and my Forester is a 1998 with 207,000 miles. You've really got to crawl underneath the dash to find the connector pins to get the OBD reader connected. Sometimes, it can be awkward to find. If you need help finding it, I am on Crown Rd. and I can show you where it is located. The only thing after that is to take it down to Autozone (or someplace similar) to get the scanner hooked up. Me email address is the123york654es at symbol verizon net. Take the 123654 out.
Usually the reason the airbag warning light stays on is the connector that is under the driver's seat has worked loose. Easy to get to, easy to fix. Look under there, and push connector housing together until it "clicks". Same problem on newer Foresters through about 2004, after which I think it was fixed with a better connector.
So what ended up being the issue? I have a 99 Forester that is experiencing the same problem. My local garage can't seem to fix it either.
I ended up spending around $700 for a Subaru dealer to replace the air bag. Everything works fine since then. I'm not sure if I got hosed by the dealer but I needed it fixed to get inspected and did not have time for my local mechanic to hunt and peck for the fix. My car, named BEV (black elderly vehicle) has not been used much but now has over 218,000 miles and still gets over 20 mpg.
