Why is the speed indicator stuck at 60-100 mph when I am doing 25?

My speed indicator was acting up just in the last 2 hours. It got stuck at 60-100 moh even though I was doing 25-30. I drove it quite a bit in warm weather today, hit a pothole last week pretty hard on the right side, and now am stopped and the indicator has gone back to 0 on start up. I don't think these cars have speedo cables anymore so did something overheat? Car is running perfectly with 186,666 miles. I really love this car!
What makes this problem better or worse?
Turning off the engine and letting it reset, perhaps?
