My serpentine belt ripped and my battery indicator came on what does tbis mean also the car wont start

Went to the store in the morning and parked car turned it off then I came back and it wouldn't start got jumper cables and was able to turn it back on got a new battery but as I was coming back I heard a rattling snap and driving wheel locked on me pulled over to find serpentine belt ripped and car wont start up again if anyone has any ideas what this could be it would be greatly appreciated thanks.
