is there fluid running through the alternator via a tube or hose

Thanks a million. You're right. The valve cover is the culprit. I checked and found that the oil filler tube on the valve cover is leaking. The top half of the tube separates from the bottom and carries an o-ring in the center, but for some reason the tube won't separate/pull out to get to the o-ring. The spark plug tower seals are also leaking, which requires removing the valve cover.
