The low beam of my headlights does not seem to throw the beam far enough in front of the car to drive at a reasonable speed on the highways at night. The covers are clean and the bulbs are OK.

Has it always been this way? Maybe the headlights need to be professionally aimed. Shops often have headlight aiming tools, that's the right way to do it. Many dealers do not check headlight aim while doing the pre-delivery inspection so that's a possibility. Get the headlights aimed.
I have the same problem with my Camry when I travel to my hometown. We get a lot of deer on the roads at night. I'm afraid I might hit one. I took the car to the dealer and complained that my 10 year old Echo provided better illumination at a farther distance. They stated that the new Camrys have lights that CANNOT be adjusted because they come as one unit with the bulb fixed on the inside of the case. And my Echo has a taller front end that projects the light farther than the Camry which tends to point downward.
