The ABS warning light came on and has stayed on. Does this mean my brakes need to be replaced, the wheel barring is about to fall off, what?

What you can determine from the ABS light coming on is that the ABS Control Module has detected a problem, turned on the warning light and stored diagnostic codes. The next step is to read out the codes from the ABS Module, then follow the troubleshooting instructions associated with that code. I can tell you that this is not likely related to the brakes needing replacement.
Most likely has to deal with something electric such as a broken wire, (worn, broken, corroded connector), chip on the teeth of the wheel bearing, or a component. This will usually flag a code and let the technician know which wheel is in fault. If visual damage isn't noticed a scan tool which allows data and history will give assitance through trouble trees to diagnois the concern.
it might be a sensor, we just had this problem. These sensors are crap! (about $230 part)
