2000 SW2 manual trans not shifting - already replaced cables - clutch ok

2000 SW2 manual trans … well kept auto BUT shifting is not engaging to move forward or reverse. I replaced cables and clips [mechanic diagnosed as clip missing or socket on cable popped off ]. That was not and did not solve the issue I never saw either clip or socket problems when cable replaced but… once replaced and pats allowed easy viewing ... can see that those are working,. However, trans is still not shifting to allow any gear engagement, clutch is working ... can shift thru gears with engine running). What should I look for, a linkage issue within the transmission (warned about the bigger job!)? BACKGROUND INFO -- The transmission always worked fine. NEVER ANY sounds from the transmission. But prior to “failure” to operate , there was a slight pop feel (no sound), then no / any gear engagement. The shifter “feels” as if works but it essentially stays in neutral .. hope this is sufficient info. Thank you for your assistance
