This happened to my 95 SL1. Take the center console out and check at the bottom of the shift rod. There is a piece of plastic that connects the shift cables to the rod. It is a ball joint type where the plastic is the cup and the end of the shift rod is the ball. The hole that the ball sits in had spread open and part of it broke off no longer holding the ball in. I had to get another one from a junk yard. It was very hard to get off the donor car trying to be careful not to break it. If you have any issues finding a replacement let me know. I'll see what I can do. We have 3 different "pull your own parts" junk yards around here. If you are having trouble understanding what I am explaining here I can take a picture of the broke plastic for you. It happened to me while in 1st gear driving through a busy intersection. As soon as I started to shift out of 1st it broke and was stuck in neutral. Had to push the car. Once I figured out what it was I held the broke plastic together while my wife shifted. EDIT: WOW! After I typed this last night I left for work and mine broke again. Lasted a year. 35 Saturns in the junk yard and all were missing this part. Autozone has it for $24.99. Search "Shifter Cable Bushing".
