Cracked timing gear

Are you speaking of the crankshaft gear for the timing chain, behind the timing cover? Was the cover removed to inspect this? Or is it another component you are speaking of? Any "cracked" component that is under high pressure and spinning at high revolutions (6,000 revolutions per minute?) is at risk for catastrophic failure and should be repaired.
