The first thing I normally do is have the battery tested. A weak battery can cause the classic "click" but no crank condition. Modern fuel injected cars require a minimum voltage to start. If the battery is more than 3-5 years old, it could be at the end of its life. Cold weather will also really tax an older battery If the battery tests 'ok', some more diagnosis is needed.
