oil stays the same for a while and then drops dramatically when driven for many miles. no signs of leaking when parked

Do you see a blue smoke coming out of the tail pipe? Ask someone to follow you and check it. Get the compression checked also. Anyway, I'd check/change the PCV valve, it's cheap and could cause high oil consumption. Zee
