Tries to turn over but does not crank.

Hello, Terminology will help us communicate better. Crank=the starter motor turning the engine, also called "turning over". Start=the engine begins to run under it's own power. In the industry, your situation is called a crank and no start. With a crank and no start issue, especially when your gut tells you it is out of fuel, start by listening for the fuel pump when you, A - open the door, or, B - turn the key to the on position without attempting to start the vehicle. If you hear nothing from the fuel pump, it may not be priming. Start diagnosing this issue by checking the fuel pump fuse and relay, The relay should click when you open the door or turn the key (depending on vehicle). If no click, the relay may be bad, and you should verify power is making it to the relay. Now, let me know if the fuel pump primes, and I'll give you a few more steps to try before hauling your vehicle to a shop.
When you hit the gas tank with the flat side of a hammer it will start. Is that the fuel pump?
Sounds like it might just be. Pull it out and test it. Probably has a bad spot on the motor.
