Why would I lose my power steering an why would my dash say coolant hot!

I lost my power steering, thought I heard something snap and then I think I drove over something. I am thinking it was a belt...?
I tried to drive it but a few miles down the road my dash starting blinking coolant hot. I pulled over and as I was slowing down it seemed like the car was shutting down. I tried to get it off to the side of the road but it would hardly move when trying to accelerate a little.
Can anyone tell me what possibly happened?

Has anyone checked the belt? That is the first thing to do as it will cause all of those problems if it's missing or not properly driving (turning) the accessories! Alternator, water pump, power steering etc.. Hard to believe a simple componet like a belt can stop a vehicle that quick but it can! Have the complete belt drive circuit checked.
Thank you very much for your reply. I am thinking the noise I heard and then driving over something, was the belt. However, when I tried pulling it off to the side of the road, when I accelerated it was like the engine wouldnt work. Hope I didnt do any more damage to it!!
I think you are ok. Got anyone that can check it out? Really needs to be done by a mechanic,, or a car nut. ALL fluids need to be checked as well just to be safe.

How far did you drive it with the HOT light on? That is the question. Otherwise it should be ok.
