This seems to be a intermittant problem. This time I noticed it yesterday and again today when I started the car. Have headlights when turned to the on position. Have turn signals in both positions (auto and on). I am elderly, don't drive a lot and never at night so am unable to be sure how often this happens. I drive about .5 miles most days, go to "town" about twice a month (25 miles roundtrip). It happened during one of these trips about a year ago.
How long has your 2005 Pontiac Grand Am had this problem?
Not sure, but think at least a year

Are you saying the automatic headlamp function is not turning them on when it gets dark? There is a sensor that measures light that can be at fault, as well as switch and wiring concerns being possible. This will require troubleshooting to determine the cause.
Auto headlights aren't supposed to work “ALL the time†- only when it is dark enough (low ambient light) will they turn on. Daytime running lights will only illuminate when shifted into gear and park brake has been released .. Fog lights are selectable vis the fog light switch. You may not have a problem here.
