NO,the starter solenoid is mounted on top of the starter.YES,you can try and tap/smack the starter/solenoid while helper tries to start it.a good quality starter will run around $125.00 at NAPA if it has a 2.5L engine in your car which you didn't include in the question,so i'm guessing at the engine size? a solenoid is around $30.00.
