What causes the AWD light to be disabled on my 2001 Pontiac Aztec ?

The wheel may have been impacted. Even a slight hit could throw off the wheel bearing making a noise like you describe. This can also damage the speed sensor that is incorporated into the wheel hub assembly. Inspect there first. Alex
