What is your question?
To start off, the car I'm asking about is not a Plymouth Acclaim. It's a 1988 Plymouth Horizon, they just didn't give that option when I started. So, I'm looking to buy this car, but it doesn't have any plates on it, so we can't drive it the hour plus to our mechanic with no plates, and he's way too busy to come out and look at it. The exhaust is LOUD and the guy trying to sell it to us says that the exhaust pipe has a leak in it. The car has a catalytic converter, so we figure it would be more expensive than if it didn't, but we still don't know about what it would cost. I'll probably call my mechanic at some point and ask a ballpark of him too, but I just want to know about what it looks like, given that I'll probably have to buy the car before it sees our mechanic.

it really depends on where the exhaust is leaking and where the car spent most of its life. if its really reusted from salt or is it from the southwest. could be a simple casket or seal for around $150 to an entire exhaust system which could run into the thousands
Muffler shop fix it cheaper than anybody else... 1988 year model only needs a universal cat and some pipes made up... I'd be more concerned about a cracked exhaust manifold or failed manifold to cyl head gasket... That's where the labor kicks in.. There's no repair protocol when it comes to extracting rusted or broken bolts... Maybe pay A mechanic to come & look at it.
Thank you. I'll ask my mechanic if he can make some of the parts. It would fix it until I had the money for perhaps an original pipe.
Thank you, and It's from ny, but it spent most of its life in a garage. The guy we're buying it from bought it from an old lady that never drove it. And he's only driven it a little bit, so I'm not sure how much of it could be rust. Plus, there's no sign of surface rust, which doesn't mean anything in ny. Thank you for answering.
