The heat monitor is not working on my 2001 Oldsmobile intrigue how can I fix it?

The heat rarely comes on and mostly when it comes on, I don't need it. The heat only works when the monitor automatically turns on. It is difficult to drive without heat in the winter or any day that it's is cold.
