why do the headlights and dashlights only work intermitenly?

Ignition switch and key lock have been replaced. Lights work when battery is hooked backup,but when you turn the key to start the lights go out and the car won't start and nothing works.

Your battery might not have enough amperage to turn the starter, despite having enough to turn lights on. Try getting a jump, or taking the Battery to an auto parts store and ask them to check it.
