The engine's processor is located inside the air cleaner box on the front left side of the engine compartment. That said, replacing this usually doesn't fix anything that's wrong with your vehicle. What problems are you having?
Dave sorry my answer never went threw to you.ok like I was saying my mechanic put my car on his computer he said he could not get a reading on my car.my car is burning a lot of gas that's why I took it to him to put it on there machine.he cam out with my spark plug an said it could this ,a tune up,but my computer did not work on his machine.now he said for $95. He needed to see what's wrong with it.$295.to change my plugs.this is what my car is doing when I start driving I give it gas an it started going like it giving more gas buy its self then then it will shift in to the next gear an it losses power .i give it more gas an it takes off again.thats why he is saying it could be the plugs.but now I don't know what could be wrong with my computer that's why I wanted to find it.
Your concern has nothing to do with spark plugs, and your computer is not faulty from what I can tell. Do you have any warning lights illuminated?
My gut feeling is that there is either an air intake restriction, a vacuum issue, a throttle body or air control valve issue, or an exhaust restriction. Your mechanic does not appear to be adept or particularly knowledgeable, from what you're describing. I would find a technician who is highly skilled near you to evaluate your concern. I think you'll be surprised to see how quickly a good diagnosis can be performed with good results.
Dave!Yes that's what i was thinking to.so what is a diagnosis.does that mean the computer dont need to be plugged in to check that problem.i thought that would come up on there machine to tell me what part is causing this problem.vinny ty
Hi Vinny,
A "diagnosis" or diagnostic testing is work done by a technician to troubleshoot your concern. This means scientifically checking for the cause of your concern by inspecting the areas I mentioned to determine where the fault is originating from. Yes, accessing the engine's processor (computer) is often one step of the testing, but not the only thing. If the processor is not communicating, it could be simply because the data link fuse is blown. Often times many cars have the data link fuse paired with the power point / lighter fuse. These commonly blow due to devices being plugged in that may have issues. Check this fuse first, and you may find that your processor will communicate. Beyond that, ask another tech to have a look at it and see if it communicates -- could be a fault with the diagnostic tool being used to retrieve trouble codes.
Also, to be clear: no machine will tell you what part is causing the problem. The processor will save codes that have set indicating some areas to check into. There is still work to be done - interpreting any of these trouble codes and then performing specific component based testing to narrow down possible causes...finally settling on the failure. This is why a good, experienced technician with decent quality equipment is necessary. Good luck!
