the car has always moved smoothly when selecting a gear. Now it makes a very loud clang and jerks the car violently when any gear is selected, It is undrivable this way.
What makes this problem better or worse?

Hello, I sympathize with what you're now experiencing. Unfortunately, even under the best circumstances, catastrophic internal failure of any mechanical component -- especially as it ages --- is possible and becomes more likely as it gets older. I can't say this is what's wrong, but it's definitely a possibility. Diagnostic testing is needed by a trained technician familiar with how to inspect and diagnose pre-OBD-II protocol vehicles. That's the biggest thing here -- pre 1996 vehicles are more difficult to diagnose by today's technicians, because if you think about it, that's some 25 years+ ago....and today's technicians may not have been around back then.
